A year so full of love, travel, and happiness. It brought me 28 perfect weddings. Every year I can feel myself grow in my work and mature in style and the weddings I have seem to follow. Every year I find myself drawn closer to my work having a more organic vibe, evoking raw emotion, showing pure grit. And, every year, I find more and more couples who want exactly that and more. They let me shoot how I want. They let me create art for the sake of art and in the process we end up with a story full of memories documenting their day. More and more of my weddings become “barefoot weddings” and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be able to share my art in this way.
Last year brought me to many places old and new, some for work and some for fun. Work trips included Jackson Hole, Wyoming, St. Augustine, Florida, Memphis and Chattanooga, Tennessee, and all over the state of Alabama. Family trips were multiple times to Pensacola to see my grandmother and family and a fabulous trip to Disney World for Thanksgiving. This year also brought me on a fun girls trip to Chicago to play Pokemon Go for their national festival. I treasure every experience this year brought and hold tight to these memories.
2017 wasn’t all pretty photos and completely full of love. At the end of 2016, my husband and I separated. We tried over this past summer to reconcile, but things didn’t work out. Becoming a single mother has made me stronger than I thought I could ever be. I’m still learning how to manage my time, keep my house clean(ish) on a frequent basis, and make sure I’m getting enough snuggles in every day. I’m still learning who I am without just the title of ‘wife’ or ‘mother’ attached to my name, relearning things I used to like but had forgotten and things I like as more of a grown up now. I’m still learning what I want out of life and what kind of legacy I want to leave. But I’m learning. I’m taking in each day as one step at a time and learning to love myself in the process.
With that being said, 2017 also grew my children a little more. Edmond turned eight, Henry turned six, and Oliver turned two. They are getting SO tall and are incredibly bright. I really am thankful to have the best kids ever.
This new year on the photo side brings fewer trips (for now), leaving my studio to save more and pay down on my student loans (on the way to goals of being debt free), and focusing on growing my business not just for work sake but in strengthening my art and growing as an artist. Personally, it isn’t off to the greatest start as the engine in my car just died, but I’m not letting it get me down. I know 2018 will be a year of personal and professional growth and I’m honestly ready to tackle every day. And I’m turning 30 this year, what up ’88 club!?
I chose to make my best of 2017 weddings post all in black and white and it felt like I was curating for a gallery. I chose three images from each wedding I shot this year, all with the bride and groom (not necessarily all romance, though most of them are). I may shoot a few thousand images on a wedding day and deliver a good many hundred, but the ones that always seem the most special are the ones when the couple is together in any form or fashion. I may share a few other artsy favorites, but these black and white images have my heart.
I did post color images, one from each wedding, on my Instagram (stories, so don’t wait to look!) and Facebook, and of course my yearly anniversary session giveaway is live there as well. My main share and my heart is here though!
In addition to dozens of my favorite vendors I got to work with this year (they will be credited on social media), I want to give a shout out to my second shooters this year. You got me through the hard days and the tears and I’m thankful for your friendship, both personally and professionally. Much love to Kristen Pender, Bre Conley, and Natalie Jones.
Thanks for letting me be real and share myself. I try to be as real as possible when I write on my blog, or anywhere, and I’m glad you’re here to read it. Please enjoy this journey through 2017, and cheers to the new year with all the new possibilities!
