Well, as you can tell, I missed Wedding Wednesday last week. Oops! Life happens, you guys. Life is very real with three littles, I’ll tell ya. But that’s okay, because I busted it to get Hiba and Jonathan’s wedding finished up this week so I could share it for today! I am absolutely in love with this Aldridge Gardens wedding.

Spring is officially here, but Hiba and Jonathan’s wedding was really my first one to kick off spring season just a few short weeks ago. My only March wedding (wait for it… five weddings coming in April!) but definitely one to remember! Jonathan and I went to Montevallo together and have known each other for years. We always hung around the same crowd but never knew each other super well. Hiba used to work with Bryanna, whose wedding I shot and who did these stunning florals with her new company Vera Flora Design (brides, check her out!). Bryanna introduced me to Hiba (via phone and email to start since she had moved to Austin) and we put two and two together that we kinda already knew each other! She and Jonathan had been together for over four years and hearing her talk about their life together was insanely sweet. Because of the long hours between us, we weren’t able to meet but a couple of times before the big day, including three days before the big day when we got together for a quick engagement session! It was golden hour dream time for the engagement, which I was even more glad for when the whole wedding day was overcast. We kinda got the best of both worlds. I goat noised through that entire session and can’t wait to share more of those images as well.

Okay I’m gushing and having word vomit as I usually do when I start trying to talk about my weddings and couples. I guess this one I’m particularly excited about because it was SO much fun! Hiba is literally one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and she welcomed everyone (including many extra guests!) with open arms. In the midst of wedding day chaos, she remained completely calm and if she stressed over anything, no one saw it! Not even me, with a camera in her face half the day. She and Jonathan chose not to have a first look prior to the ceremony and saw each other for the first time that day as Hiba was walking down the aisle. You guys, Jonathan’s face. Just wait for it. After the knot was officially tied and we took about a billion family photos, we settled down for some romance, right before one of the most lively receptions I have been to in a while! Even I was on the dance floor! Well, that’s not really a shocker to most of you, but I guess I was just really feeling it that unusually warm Sunday evening. You’ll catch a quick photo of me and some friendors in this post if you look closely enough!

My favorite details are pretty much all of Hiba’s bridal details. Her Theia Couture gown from Village Bridal, her bouquet and flower crown from Vera Flora, her blue shoes and pressed penny inside, her mother’s earrings, the rings given to her by not only Jonathan but also by his grandmother… she was truly a vision. Jonathan looked pretty dapper as well! I loved their wedding cake and groom’s cake aka doughnuts at the reception (with the play on the Simpsons, you’ll see!) and all of the beautiful linens provided by one of my favorite folks to work with, Decor to Adore. And even though I didn’t manage to get food shots (sorry, kill me), Savoie Catering killed it as always! Lastly, can we talk about how awesome the hashtag #gettingvazirius is?!

My favorite moments were all of the ones when Hiba and Jonathan got to be together. The ceremony and romance of course (romance is always my favorite), but even in the midst of a mile long family list, they stayed right by each other’s side. Even through a wild party of a reception, they were almost always right next to each other. Everyone already knew how much these two adored each other, but seeing them side by side from the time they were able to forward… that’s what it’s really about you guys, true love! Hey, I’m allowed to be cheesy and gushy, I’m a wedding photographer. ;)

Pretty mismatched pink bridesmaids wore wristlets instead of carrying bouquets, a great way to stay cost effective and still keep the pretty!

Guests. Let me give you a little PSA. And this isn’t just to Hiba and Jonathan’s guests, but to anyone ever who might possibly attend a wedding anytime in their future. If the bride or groom ask for their wedding to be UNPLUGGED… please, PLEASE honor their wishes. Put your phones down. Put your cameras down. Engage in the moment and show the couple of honor your FULL attention. What are you even going to do with that photo on your phone? Be the first to post to social media to say congratulations? Do you think they really care about that? I’ll tell you the answer- it’s no. They don’t. They want to see YOU, not your phones.

Sorry to rant on and on for a minute, but I see it every single time I’m shooting a wedding (including this one, when they asked for it to be unplugged, and people still pulled their phones out). If you want to read more about unplugged weddings, check out this post on Huffington Post. Brides, if you’re looking for a kind but clever way to tell your guests to not even touch their devices, check out this post on Offbeat Bride. Guests, just be considerate. It’s all I’m asking. Because I promise my camera will see you if your phone is out, and the couple you came to see doesn’t want to see your phones in their photos. And, to be clear, I’m mainly talking about the ceremony and things like the cake cutting and first dances. After that, please take all the selfies and snapshots you want and share. Just don’t kill the bride and groom’s photos. Please. PLEASE. Thank you.

I’m done now. Stepping off my soap box. Please continue enjoying the rest of this beautiful wedding!

At the end of the night, a last dance is something that can be really special. With the help of Amanda, Chae, and Allegra, we sent the guests to prepare for the sparkler exit while we quickly pulled candles from the tables to create a circle of love for Hiba and Jonathan to share their last dance in. It almost wasn’t possible, but came together perfectly. A great quiet moment as one of the last memories of the day for these cuties!

And, maybe one of my favorite sparkler exits ever! I absolutely love the way the colors came out in these, that Jonathan is carrying the bouquet, and whoever decided to blow some bubbles too, well, I thank you for that! Hiba and Jonathan, thank you both SO much for having me as a part of such a magical day! I wish you many years of wedded bliss and can’t wait to see you again in the future.

Wedding Wednesday coming to you on Thursday this week because I decided to take my kids to the park and for snobiz yesterday instead of blogging. It was such a gorgeous day and I needed to spend time with my littles. #sorrynotsorry Really though, because yesterday with International Women’s Day, when I was deciding which wedding to blog this week, I wanted to feature someone who is really strong and has personally been inspiring and has meant a lot to me. That’s why I chose Kaitlin. Her wedding with Cody at Griffin Farms was really something special.

Kaitlin and I became friends when I was looking for models for a styled shoot. She and Cody were just the right fit for the style we were going for. It turned out that Cody and I had actually known each other for a long time (same elementary school and he was in January and Andrew’s wedding that I shot in 2011). At our styled shoot, Kaitlin told me that they weren’t sure if they were going to have a wedding photographer, that friends could bring cameras and take candid shots. She began to describe the vision for her wedding to me and I pretty much knew that I had to shoot it and that she was supposed to be my bride. After meeting a few weeks after the shoot, she was official! Kaitlin is a hair stylist at Orbit Salon in five points, so we got together for a much needed new do for me that summer. We continued to grow our friendship as the wedding drew closer.

Well, fast forward to the week of the wedding. I had been having a lot of issues in my personal life and everything kinda culminated and blew up just a few days before Kaitlin’s wedding. I was having what might honestly be the worst week of my life. I touched base with Kaitlin a few days before the wedding and because we had grown to be friends aside from just our working relationship, she let me open up and share and was so kind and compassionate (not to mention giving wonderful advice about my situation, because she’s awesome like that). I had been looking forward to her wedding for so long and was so nervous about pulling it together and doing the kick-A job I knew I was capable of but I was in such a slump. When I got to the house she was getting ready at, she gave ME a gift (y’all, she was the bride and was supposed to be receiving), a painting of a goat! She’s actually the one that coined the term ‘goat noises,’ which if you’ve ever shot with me, you’ve undoubtedly heard. Anyway, I feel like I’m getting redundant about the awesomeness of Kaitlin, but really, she showed me kindness and strength that I really needed that week and helped me more than she’ll ever know.

And while we’re on the topic of fabulous women, I’ve got to give huge praises to my TWO fabulous second shooters for this stunning day. Megan from Megan Forehand-Kennedy Photography and Bre from Say Bre Photography came to my aid for this wedding. I actually wasn’t even supposed to have a second shooter at all, but after the horrid week I had had, my two dear friends came to be with me at no charge to make sure I survived the day. They killed it of course, but aside from their talents, I am eternally grateful for their friendship.

I hope you’re not reading this and thinking I’m a total dud and that I can’t pull through after hard situations. Trust me, it is quite the opposite of that. Here I am, five months later, and have been pushing through to be the best version of myself I can be, not just for me, but more importantly for my littles. I have pushed myself personally and with my work, constantly growing and learning who I am in my life and in my art. I am thankful to YOU guys as well, for following my journey and supporting my business.

OKAY I’ll stop now. For real though, special shout out to all the ladies yesterday and every day!

Now let’s talk about this magic known as Kaitlin and Cody’s wedding. After visiting each of their getting ready houses to shoot prep, we decided to have the first look at Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover, a special place for these two. Kaitlin at the last minute changed her dress from a vintage gown from the 70s covered in little yellow flowers to this stunning Free People dress and Cody had NO idea! The look on his face as he saw his bride was priceless. We stopped at one of my favorite fieldsy locations where I knew the goldenrod would be in bloom to pay homage to the gown that didn’t make it and for more romance shots before heading to the wedding venue, Griffin Farms, and the rest of the day went according to plan- portraits, ceremony, more portraits, and a wild reception! It was so much fun. All of Kaitlin and Cody’s friends and family were incredibly inviting and knew how to bring the party.

My favorite details from the day, aside from that gorgeous dress, definitely included that bouquet from Vera Flora Design! SO good. I actually picked it up from Bryanna to deliver and I gasped when I saw it. I’m already such a sucker for good florals, but this one was over the top. I also loved that Kaitlin and Cody kept their reception very low key and decided to have pizza for their reception food! Also, I always love mismatched wedding party, but these friends looked particularly dapper in their long floral gowns and different colored suits. I was swooning (still am).

My favorite moments are even more special than usual for this wedding. The first good moment was when I picked up the bouquet and bout from Bryanna. It was so beautiful and perfect for this couple. The good moments continued as soon as I walked into Cody’s grandmother’s home where the guys were getting ready. I walked in the door and his grandmother hugged me immediately, even though we had never met.  Even though I was already stoked about this wedding, despite my hardships of the week, I knew right then it was going to be a great day. She offered me home cooked breakfast as well, and let me tell you, Cody’s grandma can throw down on some hot breakfast. They continued on when I got to Kaitlin’s aunt’s home where the girls were getting ready and Kaitlin gave me the lovely painting she made just for me. I don’t get gifts when I go to weddings. The gift for me is really just being there and being able to create art for my couples to have for the rest of their lives and to pass on for generations, but this was special to me. The first look these two shared was so sweet and I loved the way these two looked at each other. Having lots of extra time for romance early in the day was like a dream, and sharing it with two of my business besties was even better. Kaitlin and Cody wrote their own vows to each other and of course they were amazing (Cody is a lead writer for Weld, so he already had a way with words). Then a perfect golden hour and dancing the night away with friends… the favorite moments were kind of never ending.

So, if you’ve read this far, I’m sure you’re tired of reading. Take a look at this day. Get your heart-eyed emojis ready.

Kaitlin’s mom gave her these boots as a Christmas gift years ago. Since they weren’t really her style, Kaitlin saved them in her closet but never really wore them and was curious as to why her mom get them for her. Her mom passed away a few years ago and when looking for wedding shoes, she knew exactly what to wear. Such a special way to honor her mom on her wedding day.

And Kaitlin, thanks for being an awesome friend and being patient with me through all of my crazy that week. It really meant so incredibly much to me. I’ll be reliving your day over and over with these photos!

Since I’ve made a personal commitment to blog once a week (happy wedding Wednesday, y’all!), the time seems to be flying more than usual. Wednesday sneaks up on me every week and the weeks are turning into months. Slow down, time! That’s alright, because it just means I get to bring you more beauty on a regular basis. Today, I’m sharing Leah and Prime’s intimate wedding at The Nest in Avondale.

Around this time last year, Ann Marie from Tres Beau Weddings and Tiffany from Studio Flower (amongst some other fine vendor folks!) put together a styled shoot at The Nest. It’s a cozy little space in Avondale and that was my first time shooting there. Leah went to tour the venue, saw the images from our styled shoot, and hired all three of us! We were able to recreate some of the elements of our shoot for her day (like the greenery arbor on the wall) but gave everything a flare of it’s own to help bring Leah’s vision to life. Leah and Prime are one of those super fun couples that you can see yourself hanging out with on a regular basis. They live downtown and love the city life, appreciate good music (which is a big deal to me!), and share a bond together that after spending some time with them, I know will last beyond a lifetime. Call me cheesy, but these two were definitely meant for each other.

Let’s talk favorite details. You guys know I’m a sucker for pretty florals and feminine touches. Well, Leah had all of that and more. Studio Flower totally KILLED IT on these florals. That bouquet?! So gorgeous! Leah’s Rue de Seine gown from Village Bridal could not have been more perfect. That dress was basically made for her. I loved her bridal jewelry from Twigs and Honey as well. For the ceremony, Leah and Prime chose to have just their family and closest friends in attendance, which I love. It was such an intimate setting. More friends came later for a big party, with a cocktail hour at Saturn while the room was flipped. I love weddings that incorporate so many surroundings. Avondale has so much to offer and it was refreshing to see Leah embrace that. Also, these guys chose one of the coolest wedding day hashtags: #itsprimetimeforawedding ! So great.

My favorite moments, aside from a personal ceremony, include Leah and Prime’s first look. Prime was so enamored with his bride, and rightfully so! After seeing each other and us snapping the moments, they asked us to excuse ourselves so they could have some private time on their own. We didn’t get to witness this of course, but I think it’s SO important for my couples to have some time to themselves on the wedding day. After all, it is all about you guys. Our photos could wait. I know they loved that moment most of all. Also, for The Nest to be a smaller space, they sure did fill it up with a fun party at the reception! Nearly every guest was breaking it down on the dance floor, and there were even some dance offs. Leah and Prime did a wonderful job choosing just the right tunes to fit the vibe of their day.

See for yourselves! This one’s a stunner that you won’t want to miss.

Wedding Wednesday is happening on Friday this week, because, well, life happens.

Don’t worry. The winners for last week’s giveaway will be announced soon, and because I’m bringing this blog post two days late, I’m bringing you the ultimate winter treat. If you’re not quite ready for spring to be here and wish cold weather would stay (or for me, come back, because it’s currently 76F outside), grab a cozy blanket and get ready to fall in love.

Alyse is the beautiful sister of one of my 2014 brides, Ashley (her wedding is here if you wanna see!). These two are part of an amazing family and we’ve stayed in touch through social media over the years. When Alyse and Josh got engaged, they knew they wanted a snowy wedding. Josh lived in Colorado for a little while and loves to ski, but they wanted to choose a place neither of them had ever been, to make it an even more fun adventure. Alyse began the planning process (I can only imagine planning a destination wedding to a place one’s never been, but I think she pulled it off pretty perfectly) and originally wrote me thinking she would just book for some local engagement photos. Well, my wanderlust-filled heart went all a pitter patter at the sound of Jackson Hole, so we made a date for Mexican and margs and chatted all the details. Turns out, it was going to work out just perfectly for me to go! And you guys. Trip of a lifetime. Not only was it so incredibly special to be a part of such an intimate ceremony with just Alyse and Josh’s family, but we got to see real mountains, real snow, eat elk, go on a sleigh ride with elk (not at the same time!), and take a minute to just breathe some (cold) fresh air. With where I’m at in my personal life, it was honestly just what I needed.

Another thing that worked out perfectly was that my photog bestie Bre of Say Bre Photography accompanied me on this trip! You’ll see a little bit of us mixed in, because I wanted to some shots from the trip to put things into perspective for you guys, instead of just wedding photos (but there are so many of those too, because we all know how hard it is for me to narrow down anything!). Her shots are mixed in here too!

My favorite wedding details include Alyse’s gorgeous dress, which she found on the rack at David’s Bridal for a steal! It complimented the snowy scenery so well (plus that fur, her boots, and red lips- her bridal style was on point). Josh looked pretty great too! I loved the “No Ugly Crying” handkerchief that was a special detail from Ashley’s wedding that was brought as well. The simplistic nature of an intimate ceremony was my favorite detail, if you want to call that a detail. Surrounded by the most important people in their lives and the snow, was all they needed.

My favorite moments of this trip and wedding… well, pretty much everything was a favorite moment. Seeing the excitement of the kids’ faces during the sleigh ride, having deer come right up to our hotel window, getting in the hot tub at night when it was 2F outside, and exploring a new town were all incredible. Seeing the love between two families coming together, Alyse’s sweet gifts to all the women in her family (personalized bracelets for each girl!) and their reactions when they received them, watching Josh open his gift from Alyse, seeing this beautiful couple laugh and cry together as they were married… the wedding day couldn’t have been more perfect, seriously.

Okay, I think I may start getting a little redundant because I loved everything so much. So I’ll stop myself from blabbering on. Word vomit tends to happen a lot for me when I start writing out blog posts, but honestly, I’m not mad about it. I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about this magical trip. Now, take a look at it! Little bits of more info written throughout the images as well.

And PS! We pretty much fell in love with destination weddings. I’ve done them before but never on this scale. So, if you’re getting married anywhere in the country (or world!), I’ve built two new collections just for destination weddings, nationally and internationally! I would love to share the info with you if you’re interested! Anyone else reading, feel free to share with your engaged friends, from all over.

Now, NOW it’s time for photos…

When we first arrived, we ventured to a few look out spots. I fell waist deep in the snow and it was pretty comical trying to get out!

Later that day, we joined the Young and Colvard families for a sleigh ride through the elk reserve. It was SO amazing!

This handkerchief was first used at Ashley’s wedding. Love that this small detail got to be used for both sisters, even states apart!

This is the house that the families stayed in, had the ceremony in, and where Alyse and Josh stayed for the rest of the week for their honeymoon. It’s in Wilson, just outside of Jackson Hole. Isn’t it so dreamy?! I’m ready to go back you guys…

Josh’s mom pulled greenery and pinecones from outside to create this boutonniere and the detail on Alyse’s fur muff.

Alyse and her girlfriends went on a cruise to Mexico for her bachelorette party and found this coin one night randomly while they were there. They decided it was lucky, and it became the penny in her shoe!

Alyse did a boudoir session for Josh. She ordered a 5×5 album for his wedding day gift. Needless to say, he was completely surprised and LOVED the images!

At Ashley’s wedding, the first look with her dad was almost accidental, although you would’ve thought we planned it. His reaction was perfect. We had to have that again for Alyse! We planned on it this time. Such a sweet daddy daughter moment!

By the time we ventured out for romance between the ceremony and reception, the visibility was so low. There’s actually a huge mountain line behind them. A snowstorm was on its way in and covered it all up! That snow though… all we needed.

And we ended the wedding day with night romance in the town square. Those antler arches all lit up bring me life you guys. SO gorgeous.

Alyse and Josh, I don’t know if I can thank you enough for bringing us along for your wedding. We had such a wonderful time and are so so thankful we got to come. It was the trip of a lifetime, and I hope you cherish these photos forever. Let’s go back again soon! Much love to you guys and your families.

This week, wedding Wednesday is bringing something a little fun and extra… and not featuring a past wedding, but offering an AMAZING deal for upcoming weddings!

Brides and grooms, welcome to our THIRD annual wedding giveaway!!!

EDIT: Winners have been chosen and are listed below!

Best of 2016 : Weddings : j.woodbery photography

Every time I start to count the years (for anything) I realize how quickly time flies, but guys, it’s so true. I’m so thankful to have had this website for that long (when it was such a long time coming to begin with!) and to be able to bless some sweet couples with wedding photo goodies for another year.

This year, I’ve decided to keep things very simple. Instead of having a large grand prize with multiple vendors, I’ll only be giving away prizes from myself. I’m thankful for my past vendors and all of their help, but now we’ll have a little more range with dates available and will also be able to travel!

Which leads me right into this year’s prizes! TWO couples will win their wedding coverage at half price with me! This includes eight hours of wedding day coverage with two photographers and all of your edited images on a USB with print release. Regularly priced at $3500, this will be only $1750 for two lucky couples. Now, because I would love to travel a little more, one winner will be a wedding in Alabama and the other can be absolutely anywhere else! If I don’t receive many entries for out of town weddings, I’ll choose two for Alabama, but would love to expand the reach a little more for this giveaway.

Because I’m often feeling very giving when I do this giveaway, don’t be surprised if I give out some engagement sessions or other goodies as well!

1. Your full name, wedding date, wedding venue, and city you’re getting married in
